artnet Auctions Presents: Fall Pop Prints Sale

New York/Berlin, Oct 04, 2013 ( via COMTEX) -- artnet Auctions is pleased to announce our highly anticipated Fall Pop Prints Sale, which features over 60 classic Pop works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Robert Indiana, Robert Rauschenberg, and Tom Wesselmann. This dazzling, curated selection of iconic Pop prints is perfect for both new and seasoned Pop Art collectors.

Among the sale's highlights are two stunning prints from Andy Warhol's 1983 Endangered Species series. Warhol's regal depiction of a Siberian tiger in vibrant shades of green and orange is one of the most sought-after works from the series, and is being offered with an estimate of US$60,000-80,000. In another print from the series, Grevy's Zebra, estimated at US$40,000-60,000, the colorful outlines of the creature's stripes make the work an incredibly dynamic portrait. Warhol once described these works as "animals in makeup," and, like his celebrity portraits, the artist's surreal palette amplifies the exotic nature of his wildlife subjects.

Also offered in the sale are a number of Warhol's renowned Pop portraits of celebrities. Internationally recognized as the defining icon of both Andy Warhol's career and the entire Pop Art movement, Warhol's Marilyn Announcement (1981), estimated at US$12,000-18,000, is a miniature version of Warhol's most famous image, his 1967 pink Marilyn. In this rarely seen, incredibly bright impression, the Hollywood starlet is truly stunning, her bright blonde hair contrasted with the shocking pink background. Also among these celebrated works is Warhol's portrait of Elizabeth Taylor, Liz (1964), estimated at $35,000-40,000. This Liz is one of the now-scarce impressions that is hand-signed by the artist.

In addition to Warhol's celebrity portraits, this sale includes other Pop depictions of female subjects. Estimated at US$25,000-35,000, Shipboard Girl (1965) is a classic work by Roy Lichtenstein (American, 1923-1997) and features one of his first graphic depictions of his famous blondes. The sale also includes another striking anonymous portrait in Tom Wesselmann's Big Blonde (1986-1988), estimated at US$20,000-25,000. This screenprint depicts a sumptuous, reclining nude surrounded by bold strokes of blue, green, and red. The sale features other enticing nudes, including Mel Ramos' Tea at 5PM (2008), Wesselmann's Monica Sitting with Mondrian (1989), and Larry Bell's Untitled (Suite of 6) (1974).

Another highlight of the sale is Andy Warhol's rare Shoes (Deluxe Edition) (1980). Estimated at US$75,000-100,000, this work is reminiscent of Warhol's beloved early commercial illustrations of shoes. In revisiting the subject, the artist covers these later shoes with shimmering diamond dust, highlighting the excess of the 1980s Disco scene that Warhol frequented.

To celebrate Robert Indiana's retrospective that opened at the Whitney Museum this week, we are pleased to offer the largest graphic work ever created by the 85 year old Pop artist, The Book of Love (1996). Estimated at US$60,000-80,000, the portfolio contains 12 screenprints and 12 poems penned by Indiana. The sale also includes other works by Indiana, including his red and blue Love Cross (1968), a rare hand-signed proof of his 1967 LOVE print, three works from his 1977 set of lithographs entitled The Mother of Us All (1977), and two prints from his American Dream #5 suite (1980).

The Fall Pop Prints Sale will be live on artnet Auctions from October 3 through 15, 2013, and is on view at
