First Wind Continues Sponsorship of 21st Annual LADWP Science Bowl with Scholarships and School Awards

LOS ANGELES --(Business Wire)--

First Wind, an independent U.S.-based renewable energy company, today announced it will again sponsor scholarships and school awards for the 21st Annual Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) Science Bowl. First Wind owns and operates the two phases of the Milford Wind Corridor projects that deliver clean, renewable power to Los Angeles and several nearby communities, including Pasadena, Burbank, and Glendale.

Output from the two operational phases of the Milford Wind Corridor have the capacity to provide power for about 64,000 Southern California homes, while avoiding 300,000 tons of carbon dioxide emissions that would result from conventional regional generation sources in a typical year.

"LA's commitment to renewable energy helped lead to the development and construction of our Milford Wind Corridor projects, and we hope that these scholarships will help pave the way toward a bright future for these talented students."

The 21st Annual Science Bowl competition will be held on Saturday, February 23 at LADWP's downtown headquarters (111 North Hope Street). The Science Bowl demonstrates the LADWP's commitment to the city's youth and the Los Angeles educational community. A proud LADWP tradition, the Science Bowl tests students' reflexes, teamwork skills and knowledge of science, math and technology in a fun, competitive atmosphere following a television game show format.

As part of its third year as a sponsor of the Science Bowl, First Wind is providing $7,750 in scholarships and awards to schools and students. First Wind is sponsoring all the awards in the First Wind Hands-On Competition, with prizes ranging from $250 for the five 1st place winners, to $100 for the five 4th place winners. In addition, First Wind is funding the 2nd place school award in the amount of $1,750 and the 2nd place student scholarship at $500 each for the five winners of that prize.
