Beware of online scams

VALDOSTA, Feb 08, 2013 (The Valdosta Daily Times - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- The holidays may be over the but the scams seem to be on the rise as the Valdosta Police Department reported Thursday that they are investigating more cases of online frauds.

The latest scam happened over PayPal, an online payment company, in which a scammer appears to have sent out a fraudulent confirmation message to a buyer, reports stated.

The fraudulent correspondence from PayPal greeted the victim by their e-mail address and not their name, according to reports, which is not customary of PayPal. The victim sent out the item thinking the buyer had made a payment via PayPal when in fact they had not, reports stated.

The police department has urged citizens to be vigilant of any on-line transactions and to carefully inspect any documents received by e-mail.

Contact the company you are dealing with by telephone to attempt to verify the authenticity of the documentation and transaction if there are any doubts, stated the police department's release.

The Valdosta Police Department Bureau of Investigations has been working on the above described case and has urged victims of scams to contact law enforcement authorities in your jurisdiction to file a report.
