DEMAIN EVENT: Clearing off the desk before 2013

Dec 31, 2012 (Appeal-Democrat - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) -- With basketball and wrestling primarily in our sights during the winter, a mound of side stories have slipped through the cracks. I know -- shame on me.

I do have an excuse, my hand is in the air -- Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's Eve and all the faces and attention that goes with it. Fair enough OK, maybe not.

So before we began 2013, I'm clearing off the desk, starting fresh and leaving you with these precious notes: --As if the Huskies had not dominated the headlines enough over the past couple of months, here's one more.

Sutter High School's Jaycee Carter is moving from Husky to Husker.

In case you haven't heard, the Sutter High rifle team is one of the best in the state, and just last season, the Huskies brought home the Junior Olympic National Championship -- Carter was the cog of the team.

She was a finalist in the competition and finished as one of the premier shooters in the country.

The Live Oak native received offers from just about every top collegiate program, but recently signed with the University of Nebraska.

She is expected to compete immediately as a true freshman.

--Another local youngster blazing a trail is former A-D All-Area Soccer Player of the Year Luis Martinez.

Martinez graduated from Lindhurst High in 2008 as one of the top soccer players in school history.

His 35 goals scored were fourth best in state that season. He also added 25 assists and led the Blazers to a Sac-Joaquin Section championship.

After two full seasons at Chico State, Martinez has shined at forward and is primed to have a stellar senior season next fall. Thus far, Martinez has recorded seven goals and eight assists, and he is expected to be the Wildcats' top scorer next year.

--The passion Yuba City High track and field and cross country coach Mike Buzbee has for running is second to none. We are lucky to have him as a mentor to kids who choose that outlet. He has earned that reputation because of his dedication, and continues to after reaching a milestone only 11 others have accomplished.

In November, Buzbee became just one of 12 runners to finish every California International Marathon -- all 30 of them.

His feat was recognized by the organization before the event, and knowing Buzbee's diligence and perseverance, I wouldn't doubt that he finishes another 30 marathons.

--Wrapping up the year, I would like to say thank you to our readers and those active in our sports community.

Maybe you aren't a coach or a player, maybe you simply bark from the sidelines at games, or perhaps volunteer at the snack bar.

Even if you're playing catch with your son or daughter in the backyard or getting off early from work to support your child, you are appreciated for perpetuating the lessons, values and discipline the simple arena of sport provides. It's a positive foundation for youngsters. And with those tools, those little people will grow to contribute positively to our community.
